I know there are folks on the board who have a decent amount of knowledge on this topic. My wife and I were discussing when to give our son peanut butter, he is 20 months. At times he has had walnuts. We were thinking this weekend/week. Any insight?

For peanuts or honey? We heard it for honey.

I thought honey was 3. Mine is much older than that now, so I stopped paying attention.

I think it is advised to wait if you have a history of food allergies in your family. I think peanut butter is ok after 1 without a history 2 or 3 if you have a history of allergy in the family. That being said, my allergist told me not to delay giving foods since I didn't avoid them while pregnant despite our history.

Honey is to be avoided until after 1 - a risk of botulism in infants. I don't know what magically changes after 1, but something in the body's ability to process whatever is in the honey I guess.

Here's a link to other foods to avoid/delay. It says nuts until 2 for a non-allergic child and after 3 or more for a child with allergies/sensitivities. It also has some interesting info on allergy studies and delayed introduction of foods. I haven't looked into the sources though, so don't know how thorough the information is.

It's supposedly not until age 2 for a child whose family does not have a history of food allergies. it's age 3 over that. So my daughter who has food allergies along with my whole family and goes way down the family tree with eczema, gave her son a miniscule of PB at age 2. He broke out with hives. he has the peanut allergy and his numbers have gone way up at age 2 3/4 so he won't outgrow it. 1/5 kids can outgrow it. they have to avoid all tree nuts. She DOES not or her husband have any nut allergies. And she did not have any PB while pregnant.

So you need to know your family history before you introduce the more serious allergic foods like PB if i were you. Trust me these food allergies can be quite serious in some kids and adults so be careful and proceed slowly. They only need a pinhead size of the substance to have a bad reaction if they are really sensitive which my family is. They cannot get away with eating any allergic substance at all . You can try rotation but it doesn't work in some people who are highly allergic or food sensitive which is just as bad as you still have to avoid the food most of the times. food sensitivities usually do not give the anaphylactic
reaction but can give you a host of other bad responses like headaches, stomach aches, rashes and much more.

In some sensitive individuals much less than that can induce a serious reaction.
