Seriously...WTF are they blowing up that people in Dulles are hearing the blasts?

QUOTE
Some Dulles South area residents in Loudoun County have reported hearing some sounds comparable to loud explosions. Loudoun County Emergency personnel are advising residents that the noise is from exposives training for graduating officers on the Quantico Marine Base.

The noise from the explosives training is apparently traveling farther today due to the cloudy conditions and cold weather.

awesome!

I would think that the more likely explanation for the explosions would be the quarries in close proximity to Dulles South (off Route 50, off Evergreen Mills, and off Route 29). Quantico is quite a bit further away.

I felt some rumbling, maybe around 10AM or so, even rattled some things hanging on the walls. The sound was not very loud, just a very low pitched sound almost like thunder rumbling.

I believe that I've heard the quarries before in Chantilly, and the blasting seemed to be more of a popping type sound.

I just noticed this in my inbox (still subscribed to Fairfax County Alerts):

QUOTE
Fairfax County residents may experience an increase in noise as a result of scheduled training exercises at the Marine Corps Base Quantico this week. The Marine base will be conducting munitions training from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily through this Friday, March 5. According to the Marine Corps, the overcast conditions may increase the noise and vibration as the sound bounces off the clouds. Any questions regarding the training or noise should be directed to the Quantico Public Affairs Office at 703-784-2741.

Just one bean? How earth-shaking is it if you have a whole burrito?
