What does everyone think? School on Monday? Federal Government open?
boopieman
No to all.
ColoradoChick
I have jury duty Monday.
adavis
I work from home so for me Monday is a work day for sure.

The boyfriend works for the gov. I am guessing that they will close Monday.

It's doubtful to me that they can get everything plowed if the snow doesn't stop until 8-9 tonight.
MFLetou
School closed for sure, Federal Government likely open.

Metro says it will likely have everything cleared for Monday AM.

My guess is school closed Monday if not longer. When we had the President's day storm in '03 they closed for the week.
Miss Kitty
School: no. Fed: unlikely.

When. will. it. stop??
MFLetou
They're going to have about 36 full hours of no snow to get things cleared for Monday morning. Hence my guess that the government will open. Plus, the Administration will likely get criticized outside the Beltway for not opening it.

Believe me, I'm hoping upon hope because my work follows the feds...but I think its just not in the cards.
stuarts wife
Like i mentioned on other thread, if kids have school at all, it won't be until Thursday/Friday, but my guess is, that they'll be out all week.
ColoradoChick
Schools are closed Monday and Tuesday. I just got the announcement.
teach
Just got text schools closed Monday and Tuesday!
grady_2000
I'd bet the Federal govt will be open / liberal leave. If it stops early tonight as projected they will probably get the state roads minimally clear.

Rant, our small company can't be bothered to discuss weather related policy or close the office when it might be reasonable, the president being from Mass and thinking all drivers are idiots in any weather. Anyway, if the roads are minimally clear then I suspect most firms will be open Monday.
kobechrome
My guess is that Loudoun will be closed Wed also and possibly the whole week - there are alot of side roads that need to be cleared.

If I had to guess, Fed Govt will be open Monday.

I would suspect schools may be closed all week. Storm on Tues/Wed just moved further south...Looking like 5 inches +

Federal Agencies were open today and employees were expected to be there on time. If they opened on time today, I can't imagine them not doing the same for Monday.
MFLetou
I agree, but OPM has not made a decision and won't for quite a while. A major factor is whether Metro can operate close to 100%. If they can't, the government basically can't open.

not to mention the snow that will be falling on tuesday night... icing on the cake perhaps. i take classes at george mason and they NEVER cancel class, so we'll see.

Go ahead, throw stones at me...but I don't see how much better things will be on Weds, Thurs, Fri etc. than they are on Monday or Tuesday. Roads are fairly clear already. True, they have school lots to clear, and perhaps Western LoCo has less accessibility so that drives our situation. But if they wanted to have school, I bet that they could have the lots cleared easily by Tuesday.

A week is excessive. That's just overreacting. Based on what I observed in the December storm, roads were easily passable by the following Tuesday, and that goes out even into areas like Waterford, Bluemont, etc, where I have some friends...

Thats because temps shot up. Temps will be at or below freezing the whole week. Also once you close of a couple of days it is also cost effective to just keep the building closed to save of power cost.

I agree with the power savings but that only applies if Wednesday is closed.....as for the person in the post before that, you may be guilty of being in your own little world. Keep in mind that we have over 50 elementary schools that need to have parking lots AND sidewalks plowed, and I am going to guess that not all schools have dedicated plows. Also, remember that a fair number of kids walk to school and that if sidewalks are not cleared, they will walk in the streets, which are already very narrow from not enough plowing. That's a recipe for disaster. Because school is compulsory, schools have to remember that safety is the first priority and if one kid gets badly injured because of the weather, there's gonna be Hell to pay

obviously you have not left brambleton.... and you do not have kids. Along w/the roads all the side walks have to be cleared so kids are not walking in the road or standing in the roads waiting for the bus. As i notice many people can not shovel their sidewalks. I am sure there are places in sterling that do not have the resourses we have in our ashburn hoa to plow out by a private service and must wait on the county and the county's responsiblilty is to clear the main roads first. I don't see them having school all week... especially since it is going to be so cold everything will be frozen

Using that logic you might as well keep school closed indefinitely. The jet stream pattern that is causing this may stick around until March. Haven't ventured out and about today I didn't really find the roads all that impassable. Roads were apparently clear enough for a few d!ckheads to go flying down the street in their front wheel drive sports cars. And buses don't typically go down the side streets that are in the worst shape anyway.

The problem with Loudoun is that there are still plenty of gravel roads that are used by buses and for pickups. I hit Shreve Mill road every day and the only thing on it are buses- (and the Land Rovers going to LCDS) This is just 5 miles away from Ashburn. Snow just doesn't melt the same as it does on pavement nor can your easily plow the road. This and a lack of safe busstops for kids on these busy artery routes is a major factor. Kids can't just stand in the middle of RT 9 w/ snow piled up like it is. Loudoun is a big county especially when you look at how the western part measures up to the eastern part, I'm amazed at where it actually ends when heading out Route 9. I would be surprised if they did open at all this week, especially with the Tuesday snow.

Exactly.

Not to mention, a good part of western Loudoun is without power.

I've been out today and the roads are BAD. Some roads look great but the majority are bad. School will definitely not open this week. And don't even remember 96 storm being this bad. And when school does open back up, don't know what the hell walkers will do with 8ft piles of snow at street corners.

I have left Brambleton, and I do have kids...I've also talked with several friends that live in several areas outside Brambleton.

In the last storm, several people did not clear there sidewalks. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. This snow will be here for weeks. Should schools stay closed because the sidewalks are impassable?

Like I said, throw stones.

Sure, there's gravel roads. And roads like Shreve Mill, or Cochran Mill will probably be bad for a month. As will the snow piles in Route 9...

I can't imagine sending school buses even on Belmont Ridge at this point. It was shockingly bad.

In a shocking move, my company decided to close for Monday, February 8, due to the weather situation.

This hasn't happened since the 2003 snowstorm. Apparently, they realized that printed materials aren't actually the life-sustaining critical supplies that humans need for survival, after all.

really.... really you are not for real.. yeah lets open up the schools and let the kids walk down the middle of the roads to school or let them stand in the middle of the road...no one will get hurt. Oh and what about the areas (i.e. in Sterling and older neighborhoods that rely on the county) to just walk through the school or the bus in 2 ft of snow. This is one of the largest snow storms in history.. of course VA is having a hard time.. we don't get this much snow. Plus loudoun county has 16 days.. lets use them and keep our kids safe.

Here we go. Yeah, I'm a bad parent for suggesting we commit ourselves, as parents, to find other plans to get our kids to school than the normal routes. I don't personally like my daughter walking without a parent with no snow the way people drive around here. Parents can't escort their kids to school for a week or two? Volunteer to wait at the bus stop to ensure safety? Drive their kids or find a neighbor who is willing? Is that really a hardship? As it is, how many parents are stuck trying to work and find alternative child care plans. How many parents might be losing income because they can't work? Maybe you are a stay at home mom or a parent who has a flexible employer. Many do not, and don't have the resources in Loudoun County to just stay at home indefinitely.

I venture that in another week, things aren't going to be a lot better. Why not just close schools through Feb then? All I said was I think a week is excessive. If we get 6+ inches on Tue/Wed, that is a different story...

Lets simmer down. The county closed schools, it is what it is.
