Did anyone hear the airplane take off at 2am last night (or this morning?? I've lived here for over three years and that's by far the loudest take off I've ever heard. It woke my wife and I out of a deep sleep. Ridiculous!

I've stood between runways as a 747 rolled out at full throttle. This was louder. And i could hear it for a good 3-5 minutes. |

Its not showing up on any public database...which makes me wonder.
There's nothing between 12:30 and 3:03: (N889 is a Gulfstream owned by General Dynamics, and N2QG is just a little Hawker.) N2QG H25B Atlantic City Intl (KACY) Sun 03:03AM EDT Sun 03:40AM EDT Sun 03:28AM EDT N889G GALX Bangor Intl (KBGR) Sun 12:30AM EDT Sun 01:19AM EDT Sun 01:15AM EDT N889G GALX Shannon (EINN) Sun 12:30AM EDT Sun 11:08AM GMT Sun 04:30AM GMT |

I heard on the Broadlands forum awhile back about some Russian Jet that takes off on occasion and is extremely loud.
I have heard this jet before at night but did not hear it last night perhaps I am getting used to it. Wonder how bad it is going to get when the new runway opens later this year. This post has been edited by Lee j: May 18 2008, 08:20 AM |

Still. why wouldn't it have filed a flight plan?
It could have been an An-124 or something but I would still expect to see it. |

Yes! Right over our house. I was seriously trying to plan our escape route. It's probably the loudest I've heard yet and we've been here for five years.

Well the only real loud jets that are civilian left in the world that I know of are Russian. But I am no expert.
There are some experts on the broadlands forum that discussed this a long time ago and it was a Russian jet that made all that noise at that time. One is an air traffic controller. Somebody has now brought this up over there so maybe one of those experts can chime in soon. :-) |

Yes, that's what I'm saying...in the past the Russian jet has been an Antonov AN-124.
Frankly, this sounded even louder. |

You sure this was take off an not landing? I heard it coming for a while. Then it was over the house and headed toward Dulles. At least thats what it sounded like. It was a bit scary. I thought it was landing on the house. That or WWIII started and that was an ICBM.
Also, wasnt there an air show yesterday? Maybe they were moving something last night. This post has been edited by AKs: May 18 2008, 09:45 AM -------------------- |

I actually went outside to make sure it had cleared my house and it was flying what is probably north. Sorry, a bit directionally challenged. |

I did a little research to see about noise generated from the local airports and there is a mechanism to log noise complaints. You can find more information out at this Link
According to the link, there was about 300 complaints regarding noise from Dulles and National combined last year. I called the number listed in the FAQ (703-572-8215) and filled a complaint. I let the nice lady know that there was quite a flurry of activity on the local community bulletin board this morning. She did advise that when their is significant cloud cover that those conditions usually create more noise and she said some of the older aircraft can generate the noise. She said she would research and let me know if there was more information that they needed. Would encourage others to express their concerns to the Washington Dulles International Airport Operations at 703-572-8215. |

Express your concerns about what? That we live in a neighborhood that's at the end of a runway at a airport that has been there for over 40 years. Jets make noise that's just the way it is. |
