Turns out that I am also doing some blogging for a health care community site as well (Goose Creek Financial).

Here was my first:

Managing Insomnia without Medication

Recently, the New York Times posted an excellent article on non-drug approaches to treat insomnia http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/…. The article highlights recent experimental evidence that suggests that Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (CBT) works as well or better than medications. They also provide a few handy tips on how to improve sleep.

CBT entails first learning about one’s sleep habits, including documenting times to bed, wake up times, sleep quality, use of medications, napping, daytime fatigue, the presence of stress, anxiety, and other factors. The treatment then teaches new ways to approach sleep, managing wake ups and difficulty falling asleep, incorporating relaxation techniques, and stress management. Research suggests that about 70 - 80% of patients who undergo CBT for Insomnia report sleeping better after treatment.

Behavioral Healthcare Associates, LLC has experienced clinicians who have training and research experience in providing Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia.

I am a blogger to be.

Greetings, 'tonians.

So, I've recently gone into business for myself. I'm a clinical psychologist and my wife and I just opened a private practice in the area. As part of the process of marketing myself, I've deciced to create a blog aimed at potential patients as well as referral sources.

My background is in clinical psychology. I spent 3 years in academia, and 4 years in private research, and have a firm grounding in evidence-based practice, something this is generally lacking in the mental health field. The purpose of the blog is to do a few things, including:

increasing more traffic to my website
increasing my visibility to potential patients
increasing my visibility to potential referral sources
serve as a place to help disseminate EVIDENCE-BASED information related to psychology, medicine, and health.

I will be reviewing literature and commenting on it with an eye towards what things mean for the patient. The articles will range from scientific articles on health topics (e.g., effectiveness of different diets, efficacy of psychological treatments of anxiety, depression, etc.). I will also try to recruit other "experts" to comment on articles as well, also with an eye towards "why is this important to the consumer"

I am blogging on the 'tonian first because I want to get this right. I want the experience of blogging without it being tooo much in the public domain before I want it to.

So, 'tonians, if you stumble on my little blog and have comments / criticisms, fire away!
